The BLO4C (Building Lasting Opportunities 4 Change)
(Finalist in "Alcoa Leadership through Partnership" Award)

In late 2009 the Peel Youth Services (PYS), a NGO, were about to close their doors after 22 years of service to young people in the Peel Region. Increases in the primary costs of operation became overwhelming and staff cuts were inevitable.  In response to the crisis the Manager did a Feasibility Study on a vision she had of being a youth service on a large property. In May 2010 PYS was contacted by someone who read the Feasibility Study and wanted to assist by offering their 10acre property to trial the vision for a period of 5 years at minimal rent.  The offer was accepted with gratitude.  Offering a space for nurturing of self and the environment has resulted in PYS engaging with more young people that ever before in the history of its operation.
PYS has only part-time staff, volunteers and work placements students so to maintain all that needed to be done on a large property they opened their doors to others who could utilize the space for their own specific learnings, creating and sharing a unique space.  Groups such as NOW Green, Bush Rangers, Community 1st, and Corrective Services have a keen focus on environment so assisted in maintenance and development of an organic garden.
Local high schools engaged in much needed new innovative programs developed on The BLO4C.  Within 10mths PYS has consolidated 12 consistent partnerships of which 6 have developed MOU’s.
